COLORADO SPRINGS. The three Catholic bishops of Colorado sent letters on April 14 to state legislators calling for opposition to a bill aimed at defining abortion as a fundamental right in the state of Colorado.

The bill, SB 175, was introduced by state senators Andy Kerr (D-Lakewood) and Jeanne Nicholson (D-Georgetown) and state representatives Dianne Primavera (D-Broomfield) and Mike McLachlan (D-Durango). It was passed on a 4-3 party line vote by the Democrat-majority Senate Health & Human Services Committee on April 10 and now moves on to the Senate Floor. The hearing was scheduled for April 15 but was pushed back until April 16. Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila led a prayer vigil at 3 p.m. at the Capitol on April 15.
