Catholic Charities, Wal-Mart unveil new outreach truck

2/17/2012
COLORADO SPRINGS. On Feb. 9, Wal-Mart Foundation presented a new delivery truck to Catholic Charities of Central Colorado’s Community Outreach program to aid food assistance in rural areas.

The new truck, which was purchased by Catholic Charities through a $59,000 grant from Wal-Mart, allows for more deliveries to food pantries in the diocese’s mountain communities, where roads are steep and narrow. At the Feb. 9 press conference, food boxes were loaded onto the truck for its first deliveries to Antioch Baptist Church in Yoder, God’s Pantry in Ellicott and Fountain, Hanover Pantry in Colorado Springs and Holy Family Parish in Leadville. Deliveries of food, clothing and household goods are made every two weeks.

In the past six months, 760 families, 1,286 adults and 1,086 children have been served by Marian House Community Outreach through deliveries to rural communities. This includes 380 frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving meals, 201 food boxes containing a total of 10,050 pounds of food, and other items such as baby goods, hygiene and personal care products, children’s and adult clothing, small household goods, linens, blankets and towels, and furniture such as complete bed sets, sinks, lighting fixtures and rugs.

The new truck will allow Catholic Charities to almost double the number of food boxes delivered.
