Sister of Charity Mary Catherine Kelsey dies at 94
COLORADO SPRINGS. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Mary Catherine Kelsey on Jan. 27. She died Jan. 22 at the order’s nursing facility. She was buried in the motherhouse cemetery.
She was born on May 4, 1917, in Denver and entered the order in 1935. She experienced the great Ohio River flood in 1937 while a postulant.
Sister Mary Catherine earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1949. She also received a master’s degree in education from Creighton University, Omaha, Neb., in 1955, and a master’s degree in guidance counseling from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley in 1969.
She began her teaching ministry in the primary grades at Resurrection School in Cincinnati, Ohio (1935-36). Over the next 14 years, she also taught in Memphis, Tenn., Royal Oak, Mich., and Lansing, Mich.
In 1949, Sister Kelsey returned to the West where she would serve for the next 45 years in several capacities including at Sacred Heart School (principal and elementary superior 1951-54) and Cathedral High School (secondary teacher 1962-66), both in Denver. She also seved as a counselor at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Denver (1972), elementary principal at St. Rose of Lima School in Denver (1973-74) and taught elementary grades at St. Vincent de Paul from 1974-78 and 1981-84.
Sister Kelsey worked as counselor at Machebeuf High School, Denver, from 1978 until 1981, when she moved to serve as receptionist for one year at Cherry Creek Nursing Home in Aurora, Colo., in 1984. A brief stint as teacher-counselor at Horizon Hospital in Denver commenced in 1985. In 1986, Sister taught at John Neumann High School in Pueblo, Colo., for one year as well.
Sister Mary Catherine found herself at St. Mary High School in Colorado Springs in 1987 to serve as counselor until 1990 and again from 1991-95. She also ministered in the same capacity at Trinidad Catholic High School and as a secondary teacher from 1990-91.
In retirement, Sister Mary Catherine served as a substitute teacher at St. Mary High School. She also volunteered with the local police department and served as eucharistic minister at Penrose-St Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, as well as bringing Holy Communion to the homebound.
